History on the Festival
Carnaval del Barrio has a powerful story rooted in community, culture, and connection. What many now know as a vibrant and growing celebration originally began as Sofrito & Soul, the previous name of the festival, held from 2014 to 2019 at 2500 Decker Dr.
Sofrito & Soul was created as a way for different cultures to come together, share their traditions, and connect the community with valuable resources. What started as a small but meaningful gathering on Decker Street quickly became a space filled with unity, pride, and cultural celebration.
Like many things, the festival paused during COVID, but in 2022, it returned stronger than ever. With that new beginning came a new name, Carnaval del Barrio Festival, a reflection of its growth, energy, and expanding impact.
Today, what started as a small festival has grown into something truly special, and we look forward to continuing to expand across Columbia, South Carolina.
This is more than a festival… it’s a movement.
